Ardivachar Croft Garden

artichoke

On the northwest tip of South Uist and exposed to the full force of the Atlantic gales, Ardivachar is an unlikely place for a small market garden. However, a mild maritime climate, long summer days and mineral rich machair soil, enable us to grow a wide range of vegetables, soft fruit, herbs and flowering plants.

Our aim is to produce a varied range of fresh, high quality, tasty fruit and vegetables. Plants are chosen to suit our climate and soil, and we use both modern and heritage varieties. They are grown slowly, without the use of artificial fertilizers; harvesting when the produce is fully ripe and at its peak nutritional value.

We use organic gardening techniques to ensure that our produce contains no harmful residues and does not damage the environment. Sustainable agriculture requires a holistic approach, working with nature, nurturing the soil, maintaining biodiversity and respecting our environment.

This approach produces quality and flavour, not quantity. We grow fragrant herbs and flowers, including many native wild flowers, to attract bees, butterflies and other beneficial insects.
